A study released in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed that two common conditions caused by HAIs--sepsis and pneumonia--killed 48,000 people and ramped up healthcare costs by $8.1 billion in 2006 alone.

This study compared healthcare-acquired infections caused by drug-resistant gram-negative bacteria versus drug-susceptible gram-negative bacteria and found that the drug-resistant infections increased hospital costs by 29.3 percent ($144K vs. $106K) and lengths of stay by 23.8 percent (36 vs. 31 days).
