IDSA Comments on Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Draft Research Priorities and Agenda (PDF)
IDSA applauded PCORI for developing the first Draft National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda that will serve as the framework for building the emerging field of patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR). IDSA urged PCORI to consider infectious disease areas that align significantly with PCORI's priorities and where there are gaps in the current evidence base that would benefit from PCOR. Critical ID areas include diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis C, reduction of health care-associated infections and improvement of antimicrobial stewardship.

IDSA Comments on Draft Antimicrobial Resistance Action Plan (PDF)
IDSA provided comments on the draft Action Plan published by the federal Interagency Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance highlighting the need for greater leadership, coordination, non-government expert input, accountable measures, and resources.

IDSA Supports Removing Legal Barriers that Prohibit Incentive Payments for ID Physicians Systems-Level Activities (PDF)
IDSA urged Medicare and the Office of Inspector General to establish waivers, safe harbors, and/or exceptions to federal anti-trust laws that would allow gainsharing payments for systems-level activities, such as infection control and antimicrobial stewardship programs, which avoid healthcare-related complications and their associated costs.

IDSA Submits Comments in Response to Medicare's Shared Savings Program Proposed Rule (PDF)
In a comment letter, IDSA urged Medicare to propose a more flexible approach to the Shared Savings Program that encourages the formation of innovative ACOs and demonstrates the Agency's commitment to work with stakeholders to achieve meaningful reform.

IDSA Supports Incentive Payments for Achieving Infection Control Benchmarks (PDF)
IDSA urged the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission to support incentive payments for infection control, antimicrobial stewardship and other non-patient care activities within Accountable Care Organizations and other shared savings arrangements that are focused on improving the quality and efficiency of patient care.

IDSA notes that FDA Appropriations Chairwoman appears to have received some faulty information when she took FDA to task on its plans to update antibacterial breakpoints on drug labeling (e.g., we disagree that the agency is “outsourcing” this essential function to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute).

IDSA Responds to CMS' Request for Comments on a Proposal that Would Allow Gainsharing Arrangements Between Physicians and Hosptials (PDF)
IDSA requests that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) create an exception to the physician self-referral ("Stark") law that would allow hospitals to incentivize ID physicians who successfully implement and maintain infection control, antimicrobial management and prevention procedures.
