Groups Urge Congress to Reauthorize Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) (PDF)
IDSA joined over 40 health organizations and companies to urge Congress to reauthorize PAHPA, wich includes key preparedness programs such as the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), the BioShield Special Reserve Fund, Public Health Emergency Preparedness grants, and the Hospital Preparedness Program.

IDSA sent a letter to key congressional negotiators urging them to quickly pass PAHPA reauthorization and to include a Senate provision creating a Strategic Investor to leverage venture capital for the development of new medical countermeasures.

IDSA commends the PAHPA Reauthorization Act and encourages new provisions to incentivize antibiotic R&D, provide federal leadership to explore options for public private partnerships to focus on early antibiotic discovery research, and strengthen influenza preparedness and response.

IDSA and several public health groups wrote to House Appropriations Committee leaders and urged that unspent pandemic influenza preparedness funds be maintained for their intended purposes rather than being used as an offset for the Supplemental funding bill now under consideration.

IDSA Joins Call for Emergency Influenza Funding (PDF)
IDSA supports emergency funding for pandemic influenza preparedness in light of the 2009 H1N1 influenza outbreak. Funds would be used for vaccine development, antivirals purchase, state and local efforts, global disease detection, purchases of personal protective equipment and antivirals for prophylaxis of healthcare workers, etc.

IDSA, Others Support Increased Funding for Pandemic Flu and Biodefense Preparedness (PDF)
IDSA and other members of the Working Group on Pandemic Influenza Preparedness sent a letter to Congressional leaders endorsing an Administration proposal to add $363 million for pandemic influenza activities at the Department of Health and Human Services and $542 million to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

IDSA Endorses 50% Tax Credit for Infectious Disease Product Research & Development (PDF)
New legislation, S. 2351, introduced by Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), if enacted, will help to spur the development of new antibiotics, antiviral drugs, vaccines, diagnostics, and biological products to address MRSA, gram-negative bacterial infections, XDR-TB, and other dangerous drug-resistant and other infectious pathogens.

IDSA Endorses the Infectious Disease Research and Development Act of 2005 (PDF)
IDSA has endorsed H.R. 3154, The Infectious Diseases Research and Development Act of 2005, a bill sponsored by Congresswoman Barbara Cubin (D-WY). The bill, if enacted, will provide incentives for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to invest in research and development with respect to antibiotic drugs, antivirals, diagnostic tests, and vaccines that may be used to identify, treat, or prevent a “qualified infectious disease product.”
