IDSA ERF/NIAD Joint Research Awards

The IDSA Education and Research Foundation (ERF) and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) have joined forces to offer the IDSA ERF/NFID Joint Research Awards. Our goal is to support needed research by promising young researchers who may not otherwise find funding as federal and other institutional research support becomes more difficult to obtain. By co-sponsoring awards we hope to expand the awareness of our awards among the research community and attract the best possible candidates each year.
Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Postdoctoral Fellowship is open to individuals who are enrolled in accredited graduate graining programs in infectious diseases. The fellowship is provided on a competitive basis. Selection criteria will include but not be limited to the applicant’s scholarship performance and professional qualifications, scientific merit of the proposed project, validity of the research rationale, and adequacy of the facilities to the applicant. Postdoctoral fellows who hold comparable fellowship are not eligible. Applicants and their sponsors must be members of IDSA unless otherwise noted.
Merle A. Sande/Pfizer Fellowship Award in International Infectious Diseases
This award is intended to encourage young physicians interested in international medicine. The award will be given for important clinical research in infectious diseases and/or HIV/AIDS conducted in a resource-limited setting. The successful applicant will be expected to spend a significant amount of time during the year in country. The award amount is $60,000 for one year.
The applicant should note the following specific requirements for this award and address these requirements in the applicant letter and application:
- The applicant’s research must be conducted in a resource-limited country as defined by the World Bank (low- income and low-middle-income countries).
- The application must indicate how much time during the year will be spent in the resource-limited country.
- The applicant’s sponsor must be from the resource-limited country and does not necessarily have to be an IDSA member.
Reporting Requirements
The fellow will be required to submit a two-page, single-spaced report at the conclusion of the fellowship. A manuscript submitted for publication in a scientific, peer-reviewed journal, resulting from work accomplished during this fellowship, may be submitted in lieu of the final report. Each recipient of an IDSA ERF/NFID Postdoctoral Fellowship or Young Investigator Award is required to acknowledge the sponsorship of his or her award. All publications under the award must explicitly state that the awardees' work has been performed as a Postdoctoral Fellowship Award recipient of the IDSA ERF and NFID. Acknowledgement must also be given to the sponsor supporting the award.

Young Investigator Awards
Young Investigator Awards are for junior faculty members only. Candidates for Young Investigator Awards must have a medical or equivalent doctoral level degree, are young investigators, and should not be more than four years out of a training program. The candidates also must be assured of a faculty position at a U.S. institution. The awards are provided on a competitive basis. Selection of awardees includes consideration of each applicant’s commitment to clinical and laboratory investigation, the research program envisioned by the applicant, and creativity, originality, and excellence in prior performance. Priority will be given to qualified investigators without active grant support. Researchers with R01 grants are not eligible for Young Investigator Awards, but those with K grants may apply.Applicants and their sponsors must be members of IDSA.
Association of Specialty Professors-IDSA Young Investigator Award in Geriatrics(sponsored by the Atlantic Philanthropies [USA] Inc. and the John A. Hartford Foundation)
This award provides support to infectious disease faculty within the first four years of appointment who are interested in academic careers focused on the geriatric medicine aspects of the subspecialty. As the population ages, infectious diseases specialists will play an increasingly important role in caring for older patients, and this award will provide the impetus required for long-term career development in this area. The award amount is $100,000 over two years ($50,000 per year). Additionally, the award includes $3,000 in travel funds to be used to attend the required meetings of the American Geriatrics Society in years one and two of the award and IDSA in the second year.
The applicant should note the following additional requirements for this award and address these requirements in the applicant letter and application:
- The applicant must provide a letter from both the department chair and the division director noting that the applicant possesses a faculty appointment and that the applicant’s institution is willing to contribute $25,000 each year to support his or her research efforts (in kind support is acceptable).
- All eligible award candidates must have a faculty appointment as of July 1, 2008. Candidates must have completed a subspecialty internal medicine fellowship leading to certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine and be within four years of a first faculty appointment.
- The applicant must commit 75 percent of his or her professional effort to research activities; 40 percent of professional effort should be committed to this award.
- The applicant must develop and implement a basic, clinical, or health services research project focused on the geriatric aspects of the infectious diseases subspecialty. This should be outlined in the research proposal.
- The applicant must generate and implement a career development plan focused on the geriatric aspects of infectious diseases. This plan must include organizing and interacting with a mentorship team comprised, at a minimum, of a geriatrician, an infectious diseases subspecialist, and one other member; the applicant’s research mentor must be the leader of this team. The plan must also include specific measures for the continued involvement of the applicant in structured geriatrics activities including, for example, developing appropriate education resources, teaching the geriatric medicine aspects of infectious disease, or developing clinical services focused on geriatric patients.
- The applicant must have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status classification in the United States.
Astellas Young Investigator Awards
(sponsored by Astellas USA Foundation)
These awards provide funding to young investigators who have demonstrated outstanding research in any area of current interest in the field of infectious diseases. Two one-year awards of $50,000 will be awarded.
Wyeth Young Investigator Award in Vaccine Development
(sponsored by Wyeth Vaccines Research)
This annual award provides funding for outstanding research in vaccine development, either through clinical or laboratory investigation. The candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to vaccinology as a career, and must be conducting research or working in a recognized and accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or in a government agency. The award amount is $60,000 over two years ($30,000 per year).
Reporting Requirements
Young investigators who receive two-year awards will be required to submit a one-page, single-spaced progress report at 12 months. Failure to do so will result in the delay or discontinuation of the award. In addition, all young investigators will be required to submit a two-page, single-spaced report at the conclusion of the award. A manuscript submitted for publication in scientific, peer-reviewed journal, resulting from work accomplished during this fellowship, may be submitted in lieu of the final report. Each recipient of an IDSA ERF/NFID Young Investigator Award is required to acknowledge the sponsorship of his or her award. All publications under the award must explicitly state that the awardee’s work has been performed as a Young Investigator Award recipient of IDSA ERF and NFID. Acknowledgement must also be given to the sponsor supporting the award.

IDSA Society Awards

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the IDSA Education and Research Foundation offer awards to individuals to honor outstanding achievement in the field of infectious diseases. Society Awards have been bestowed upon pioneers in the study of newly emerging diseases, inspiring and supportive teachers, those who paved the way for life-saving vaccines, those committed to serving the needs of communities most susceptible to but least equipped to deal with infectious diseases, and many others who have made a great impact on the field of infectious diseases. IDSA Society Award recipients have varying interests but are alike in their passion for their work and dedication to making a difference, whether through direct patient care or basic research. Applicants and sponsors must be members of IDSA.
The 2008 Society Awards will be presented at the 48th Annual ICAAC/IDSA 46th Annual Meeting, in Washington, DC, October 25-28, 2008.
Alexander Fleming Award
The Alexander Fleming Award for lifetime achievement is granted to an IDSA member or fellow in recognition of a career that reflects major contributions to the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge about infectious diseases.
The award recipient will receive a $3,500 honorarium and will be reimbursed for Annual Meeting travel expenses to include coach airfare and one night lodging.
Oswald Avery Award
The Oswald Avery Award for early achievement is granted in recognition of outstanding achievement in an area of infectious diseases by an individual member or fellow of IDSA who is 45 or younger. The award is based on overall achievement, not usually a single study.
The award recipient will receive a $2,500 honorarium and will be reimbursed for Annual Meeting travel expenses to include coach airfare and one night lodging.
Clinical Teacher Award
The Clinical Teacher Award is granted to an IDSA member or fellow in recognition of a career involved in teaching clinical infectious diseases to fellows, residents, or medical students. The award recognizes excellence as a clinician and motivation to teach the next generation. Particular attention will be given to nominations that document the impact of an individual on the school and community where he or she practices.
Requirements for the award include:
- exemplary teaching skills
- implementation of innovative educational programs
- outstanding bedside and patient communication skills and the ability to convey these skills to others
- evidence of teaching awards at the local or regional level
The award recipient will be reimbursed for Annual Meeting travel expenses to include coach airfare and one night lodging.
Mentor Award
The Mentor Award recognizes individuals who have served as exemplary mentors. This award is presented to an IDSA member or fellow who has been exceptional in guiding the professional growth of infectious diseases professionals. Nominees may work in any field of infectious diseases; be involved in patient care, education, or research; and be in private practice, academia, or public health. Nominees may mentor medical students, doctoral and post-doctoral students, residents, fellows, or those early in their professional careers. Current trainees of a nominee are not eligible to write nomination letters for the Mentor Award.
Requirements for the award include:
- availability to provide counsel, assistance, and encouragement
- willingness to make serving as a mentor a priority
- ability to assist in identifying and achieving goals, and developing important skills
- ability to assist in solving problems and overcoming obstacles impeding career development
- important role model characteristics, such as integrity and compassion
- well-established record for training and mentoring academic and IDSA leaders over a sustained period of time
The award recipient will be reimbursed for Annual Meeting travel expenses to include coach airfare and one night lodging.
Society Citation
The Society Citation is a discretionary award given in recognition of exemplary contribution to IDSA, an outstanding discovery in the field of infectious diseases, or a lifetime of outstanding achievement in a given area—either in research, clinical investigation, or clinical practice. Occasionally, this Citation acknowledges milestone infectious diseases events or activities.
The award recipient will be reimbursed for Annual Meeting travel expenses to include coach airfare and one night lodging.
Watanakunakorn Clinician Award
Named to honor the memory of Dr. Chatrchai Watanakunakorn, this award is given annually by the IDSA Education and Research Foundation to an IDSA member or fellow in recognition of outstanding achievement in the clinical practice of infectious diseases. The recipient must be in clinical practice, spend at least 75 percent of his or her time in direct patient care, and exhibit excellence in one or more of the following areas:
- clinical care
- clinical research
- patient or community education
- compassion
- patient advocacy
- general community service and service to a national or state infectious diseases society
- local recognition in medical journals, newspapers, or magazines will also be taken into consideration
The award recipient will receive a $2,500 honorarium and will be reimbursed for Annual Meeting travel expenses to include coach airfare and one night lodging.
Nomination Instructions for all Society Awards
The nominations will be reviewed by the Society Awards Committee or the State and Regional Societies Board, and a recommendation for each award will be made to the IDSA Board of Directors for approval. IDSA members or fellows who are currently serving on the IDSA Board of Directors are not eligible to be nominated for Society Awards. Nominators must be IDSA members or fellows.
Each nomination packet should include letters (3 maximum) of nomination the describe, with examples, how the candidate meets the requirements for the award and the nominee's curriculum vitae and bibliography.

Medical Scholars Program
(formerly Summer Scholarships for Medical Students)
All applications must be postmarked by March 3, 2008.
An important part of IDSA’s mission is to promote the subspecialty of infectious diseases by attracting the best and brightest medical students to the field. To further this goal, the IDSA Education and Research Foundation offers summer scholarships to medical students with mentorship by an IDSA member or fellow. It is the responsibility of IDSA members and fellows to identify and solicit interested students.
Eligibility
Students in any year of an accredited U.S. medical school are eligible for this award. The scholarship activity must focus on pediatric or adult infectious diseases and may involve either clinical or research activities. Acceptable clinical activities can range from a preceptorial relationship with an ID consultant to participation in clinical trials or any other appropriate variant of clinical activities. Acceptable research activities include all facets of infectious diseases, including epidemiology, microbiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Proposals will be classified as belonging to one of the following categories: Laboratory Research (domestic), Clinical Research, and International. Each student must have a mentor who is an IDSA member or fellow. Past award recipients may not reapply. Multiple students working on the same project may apply but must submit separate applications.
To Apply
All applications must be postmarked by March 3, 2008. Please indicate the project category for the proposal. Applications will be reviewed by IDSA’s ID Training Program Directors Committee. They will be judged and selected based on the positive exposure to the field of infectious diseases provided by the planned scholarship activity. Winners will be notified by the beginning of May.
Each scholarship recipient will receive $2,000: $1500 to be disbursed in July 2008 at the beginning of the scholarship activity, with the remaining $500 awarded at the conclusion of the project and submission of a final report to IDSA.
Reporting Requirements
Students will need to answer the following questions and turn in a brief final report at the end of the activity, or the balance of the funding will be forfeited:
- How did the scholarship help you to do a project? Would you have been able to do it without IDSA’s funding?
- Were the results of your work published in a journal or presented at a meeting? Do you have plans to do so?
- Have you carried your research beyond the scope of your original proposal? Do you plan to?
- What will you do next in your ID career?
Students who submit an approved abstract of their activity for the Annual Meeting will have their registration fee waived.

HIVMA Minority Clinical Fellowships
Applications for applying must be postmarked by February 15, 2008.
The primary objective of the HIV Medicine Association Minority Clinical Fellowship is to enable underrepresented minority post-residency physicians to gain HIV clinical experience and expertise in an HIV clinical setting. The goal of the program is to increase the number of minority physicians with the expertise and the commitment to provide clinical care to HIV positive patients from minority communities. Two Fellowships will be awarded to an African American and Latino applicant—MD or DO—with a demonstrated interest in HIV medicine, who will have completed their residencies prior to the start of the Fellowship, or are in the first five years of medical practice. Individuals currently in clinical practice will be expected to spend at least 50 percent of their time on clinical care and clinical education associated with the Fellowship.
Eligibility
Applicants must be of African-American or Latino descent and have a demonstrated interest in HIV medicine. Applicants must be legal residents of the U.S. and demonstrate intent to establish their practice in areas of the U.S. with large minority populations. Applicants must have completed their residencies prior to the start of the fellowship or be within the first five years of clinical practice, and be board eligible. Eligible candidates must not have completed, be currently enrolled in, or accepted to an ID fellowship program.
Criteria
Candidates must identify an HIV clinical program with a linkage to an academic institution where the majority of their time is spent engaged in HIV clinical care. Candidates must have the opportunity to continuously manage at least 30 HIV patients over the course of their clinical training experience, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Sponsoring institutions must have an adequate census of HIV patients to ensure an adequate clinical experience. Clinical settings with large minority patient populations are required. Fellows may elect to spend up to 2 months of their fellowship at another approved institution, clinic or practice to supplement their clinical experience.
Applicants must identify a mentor to oversee their clinical experience. Mentors must be HIVMA members. Applicants may select the mentor and institution of their own choosing, and a list of clinical sites with the capacity to accommodate a candidate will be provided.
Funding
Two fellowships of up to $60,000 plus fringe benefits for one year will be awarded to the chosen candidates through the sponsoring institutions. Chosen candidates will receive fringe benefits commensurate with those enjoyed by staff of similar rank at the sponsoring institution. Additionally, fellows will receive a one-year membership to HIVMA and free registration and travel support for the IDSA Annual Meeting, where fellowship winners will be announced. Mentors from sponsoring institutions will receive $10,000. Funding will begin in July 2008.
Reporting Requirements
All fellows will be required to submit a self-report at the close of the fellowship that includes any publications and/or abstract presentations produced as a result of the fellowship. Mentors will be asked to submit a summary of the candidate’s experience at the close of the fellowship.

HIVMA Leadership Awards
All nominations for the 2008 HIVMA Leadership Awards must be received by April 1, 2008.
HIVMA established its award program in 2003 with the HIVMA Leader Awards in HIV Clinical Education and HIV Research to recognize HIVMA members who have made significant contributions to HIV knowledge and the provision of quality care.
HIV Research Award
The HIV Research Award recognizes an HIVMA member who has made outstanding contributions to HIV medicine in clinical or basic research. Nominees must be actively engaged in HIV research, must be within 10 years of their first faculty appointment, and must not have achieved the rank of professor or equivalent at their institution. The award will be based on innovation and originality and require demonstration of significant independent research (such as success in securing independent peer-reviewed grant funding) and productivity (such as publications in peer-reviewed journals). The ideal candidate will have succeeded in changing the way we think about HIV disease or our approach to patient care. The recipient will be granted a $2,500 honorarium and will be reimbursed for travel expenses to the Annual Meeting.
Submission Requirements
Nominators should address each of the following criteria in a detailed letter, including examples when appropriate:
- demonstration of independent
- research (as evidenced by ability to obtain grant funding)
- productivity (as evidenced in publications in peer-reviewed journals)
- innovation and originality
- impact on the field of HIV research

HIVMA Clinical Educaiton Award
The HIV Clinical Education Award recognizes an HIVMA member who has demonstrated significant achievement in the area of HIV clinical care and provider education. Significant achievement will be based on overall achievement and refer to contributions to the acquisition and dissemination of information on HIV disease that transcend a single institution. The recipient will be granted a $2,500 honorarium and will be reimbursed for travel expenses to the Annual Meeting.
Submission Requirements:
Nominators should address each of the following criteria in a detailed letter, including examples when appropriate. Preference will be given to nominations that reflect a broad base of support:
- Describe the impact of the nominee’s clinical/education activities outside of the nominee’s institution or outreach to a group with unmet needs.
- Provide specific examples of the candidate’s teaching skills and impact.
- Describe the audience affected by the clinical educator and how they were affected—whether inside or beyond the usual academic setting.
- Illustrate originality and innovation in the area of clinical education. Include no more than two examples of a curriculum, manuscript, book chapter, or other educational materials that the nominee has developed.
- List examples of the nominee’s impact on patient care.
