IDSA ERF/NFID Joint Research Awards

The IDSA Education and Research Foundation (ERF) and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) have joined forces to offer the IDSA ERF/NFID Joint Research Awards. Our goal is to support needed research by promising young researchers who may not otherwise find funding as federal and other institutional research support becomes more difficult to obtain. By co-sponsoring awards we hope to expand the awareness of our awards among the research community and attract the best possible candidates each year.

Extended Deadline for application: February 19, 2010

(sponsored by the Atlantic Philanthropies [USA] Inc. and the John A. Hartford Foundation)

This award provides support to infectious disease faculty within the first four years of appointment who are interested in academic careers focused on the geriatric medicine aspects of the subspecialty. As the population ages, infectious diseases specialists will play an increasingly important role in caring for older patients, and this award will provide the impetus required for long-term career development in this area. The award amount is $100,000 over two years ($50,000 per year). Additionally, the award includes $3,000 in travel funds to be used to attend the required meetings of the American Geriatrics Society in years one and two of the award and IDSA in the second year.

The applicant should note the following additional requirements for this award and address these requirements in the applicant letter and application:

  • The applicant must provide a letter from both the department chair and the division director noting that the applicant possesses a faculty appointment and that the applicant’s institution is willing to contribute $25,000 each year to support his or her research efforts (in kind support is acceptable).
  • All eligible award candidates must have a faculty appointment as of July 1, 2008. Candidates must have completed a subspecialty internal medicine fellowship leading to certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine and be within four years of a first faculty appointment.
  • The applicant must commit 75 percent of his or her professional effort to research activities; 40 percent of professional effort should be committed to this award.
  • The applicant must develop and implement a basic, clinical, or health services research project focused on the geriatric aspects of the infectious diseases subspecialty. This should be outlined in the research proposal.
  • The applicant must generate and implement a career development plan focused on the geriatric aspects of infectious diseases. This plan must include organizing and interacting with a mentorship team comprised, at a minimum, of a geriatrician, an infectious diseases subspecialist, and one other member; the applicant’s research mentor must be the leader of this team. The plan must also include specific measures for the continued involvement of the applicant in structured geriatrics activities including, for example, developing appropriate education resources, teaching the geriatric medicine aspects of infectious disease, or developing clinical services focused on geriatric patients.
  • The applicant must have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status classification in the United States.
