Harvard Business Review: Do Most Hospitals Benefit from Directly Employing Physicians?
In the past, some hospitals have generated over one million dollars in physician operating losses. Administrators are now interested in developing strategies to get a greater return on their investment in physician employees. One suggestion would be to increase mangement on returns and decrease management on losses. There are 6 proposed strategies that can direct hospitals to meeting their goals: establish goals and target returns for physician organizations, strengthen physician operations, revamp compensation and incentives contracts, pursue reality based contracts with insurers, and motivate physicians to contract full-time. Through implementation of these strategies hospitals are hoping to have a unified physician operating model.
