Infectious Diseases Society of America Launches Call for Applications for Next Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Infectious Diseases

The Infectious Diseases Society of America seeks candidates to serve in the position of editor-in-chief of The Journal of Infectious Diseases. The current editor-in-chief, Martin S. Hirsch, MD, FIDSA, is stepping down at the end of 2022 after a distinguished term of service. 

Published continuously since 1904, JID is the premier global journal for translational research on infectious diseases. It publishes Major Articles and Brief Reports describing original research on microbes, immunology and host defense, epidemiology and the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.

The ideal candidate is an individual with a strong record of academic excellence in translational research with wide and inclusive knowledge of the field of infectious diseases to guide JID’s development and advancement over the next 5–10 years. The successful applicant will demonstrate a compelling strategic vision for the journal’s ongoing development and differentiation from the Society’s other two journals, Clinical Infectious Diseases and Open Forum Infectious Diseases, and other reputable journals in the field; excellent communication skills; a commitment to working collaboratively with the editorial team, staff and publisher as well as with the editors of IDSA’s other journals; a profound commitment to diversity, inclusion, access and equity; a clear understanding of trends in scientific journal publishing, including optimizing digital functionality and the deployment of social media channels; an international network of colleagues; and deep editorial experience. Candidates should also have deep understanding of the challenges faced by the field of infectious diseases with a passion to build awareness and improve its visibility.

The selected candidate will succeed to the editor-in-chief role after Dr. Hirsch completes his term on Dec. 31, 2022. See the complete editor-in-chief position description for further detail.

  • Full CV;
  • A letter summarizing the candidate’s vision and goals for JID over the next 5 years (2023 – 2027);
  • A letter of support from the candidate’s institution (approximately 40% release time; all editorial management and administrative support will be provided by IDSA);
  • Two letters of recommendation from peers that address the candidate’s research, medical writing and editorial abilities.
