J. Kevin Carmichael, MD, FIDSA

J. Kevin Carmichael, MD, FIDSA, began work in HIV in the early 1980s while in medical school in Miami, Florida. During his residency at the University of Miami, he co-authored one of the first handbooks for clinical HIV care, HIV/AIDS: A Primary Care Handbook. He completed a fellowship in academic family medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1990. He then moved to The El Rio Community Health Center, where he founded El Rio Special Immunology Associates, a Ryan White-funded HIV clinic, serving as medical director and providing direct patient care until December 2018. Currently he is a consultant doing academic detailing in sexual health. He has long been active in HIV advocacy locally and nationally. He was a founding board member of both the HIV Medicine Association and the Ryan White Medical Providers Coalition. He served two terms on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents. He is a board-certified family physician and a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
