ID one of top specialties for annual salary increase

Medscape’s latest annual Physician Compensation Report indicated a 6% pay increase for ID physicians. Only the diabetes and endocrinology specialty experienced a higher increase at 7%. 

IDSA’s longstanding efforts, including our outreach to over 200 fellows and many active ID physicians over the past four years, have been a catalyst for this positive change by providing tools and training to help our members negotiate fairer compensation. Other likely factors may include heightened physician awareness of market benchmarks, a shift in compensation methods from production to presence and availability, and additional funding for clinical leadership roles and call availability. The largest gains may be among early-career ID physicians, who are becoming more educated about the value they bring and are fielding multiple offers before accepting a job offer.

Improving ID compensation is a top priority for IDSA, and we will continue multipronged efforts to build on this progress. Help us help the field:

• Make full use of the new add-on codes (which IDSA successfully lobbied the federal government to establish) for complex inpatient ID services (G0545) and complex outpatient care (G2211).
• Use IDSA physician compensation tools and resources.
• Join our Member Advocacy Program to advocate for the ID workforce, including improved reimbursement, research and public health funding, and more.
• Spread the word and encourage medical students and residents to choose ID.
