Brendan J. Kelly, MD, MS

Brendan J. Kelly, MD, MS, is an assistant professor of medicine (infectious diseases), epidemiology and microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kelly sees patients as an infectious diseases consultant in Philadelphia. He also leads the MOTION (MIcrobiome TransmissION) Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania, which brings together microbiome measures and transmission modeling to better understand how microbes move between humans, animals and the environment. Dr. Kelly’s laboratory leverages understanding of microbial transmission and colonization resistance to develop microbial therapeutics, with the goal of preventing pathogen colonization and infection — particularly colonization and infection by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Dr. Kelly’s work has been funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Kelly deeply values collaborative research and working with experts from other fields to develop new approaches to pressing public health threats. He collaborates closely with colleagues in basic and clinical microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, applied math, veterinary medicine and clinical infectious diseases.
