While the start of a new calendar year offers beginnings, it’s also a time for reflection. Before we close the book on 2024, we wanted to revisit some of the most viewed posts on Science Speaks and share other highlights from the past year.

The blog featured several highly viewed contributions from IDSA’s Journal Club, a panel of IDSA members who search the medical literature for studies with an impact on the clinical practice of infectious diseases and write brief reviews, which highlight key takeaways from these studies.

These included a post from Zeina Kanafani, MD, MS, CIC, FIDSA, addressing twice daily cephalexin for uncomplicated urinary tract infection in women and a piece by Daniel Mendoza, MD, PhD, on the efficacy and safety of an early switch to oral therapy in patients with low-risk S. aureus bacteremia. Another Journal Club post, from Aldon Li, MD, FIDSA, focused on proper antibiotic duration for cholangitis, while a review by Christopher J. Graber, MD, MPH, FIDSA, looked at stepdown strategies for complicated gram-negative urinary tract infection with bacteremia.

HIVMA Board member Joseph Cherabie, MD, MSc, shared a front-line perspective on the surge in syphilis cases in the U.S. and shared practical tips and resources for clinicians. Joshua M. Wong, MD, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provided an update about the growing risk of dengue globally.

Readers also learned about the U.S. government’s order of nearly 5 million doses of a cell-based, adjuvanted H5-vaccine for avian flu preparedness in a June 2024 post from longtime blog contributor Daniel R. Lucey, MD, MPH, FIDSA.

Practice guideline authors shared key takeaways from updated guidelines for evaluating new fever in adult patients in the intensive care unit (Naomi O’Grady, MD, FIDSA, and Stan Deresinski, MD, FIDSA) and for diabetes-related foot infections (Eric Senneville, MD, PhD).

In addition, IDSA and HIVMA members and leaders provided important insights in powerful reflections about World AIDS Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, their experiences meeting with policymakers on Capitol Hill, and the passing of pioneering ID physician and researcher Adaora Adimora, MD, MPH, FIDSA.

Thank you to all the authors who shared their voices, perspectives and expertise with us in 2024. If you would like to write for Science Speaks, please see our contributor guidelines. We would love to hear from you!
