As Infectious Diseases History Unfolds, Science Speaks Keeps Chronicle and Archive

Member-authored posts offering insights and updates on the spread of COVID-19 drew more than 100,000 visitors to the IDSA/HIVMA global Science Speaks blog in March. This, as rapidly escalating, worldwide outbreaks of the new coronavirus were recognized as a pandemic.

Also among the top 10 posts drawing new readers daily to the blog last month, was an interview from 2011 with National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci, M.D., FIDSA, as part of a Science Speaks series on 30 years of AIDS.

The iconic physician and scientist, who led research that changed the course of the HIV pandemic over the last 40 years, discussed his work in five presidential administrations as he guided evidence-based actions to combat infectious diseases. His remarks now gain new relevance as he works to inform the Trump administration’s responses to COVID-19.

Also in the 30 years of AIDS series, as the spread of a new virus poses global challenges, are interviews with former U.S. global AIDS coordinators Mark Dybul, M.D. and Eric Goosby, M.D., ICAP at Columbia University, IDSA and HIVMA member Wafaa El-Sadr, M.D., MPH, MPA, FIDSA and John G. Bartlett, M.D., FIDSA.

History is being made again. The work of IDSA and HIVMA members will live in the lessons we learn now. See all IDSA and HIVMA member contributions on COVID-19 coverage and please consider contributing to Science Speaks’ coverage with a guest post or interview.
