Science Speaks Provides Updates on Wuhan Outbreak

When a pneumonia-like illness was recently discovered in a series of patients and linked to visits to a seafood market in the transportation hub Wuhan City in the People’s Republic of China, IDSA Global Health Committee member Daniel Lucey, M.D., MPH, FIDSA was on the story for IDSA. Dr. Lucey collected updates from China and Hong Kong health officials, as well as the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and news reports, sharing them on the IDSA/HIVMA global Science Speaks blog.

The series of updates on the outbreak, beginning Jan. 7, answers important questions as the outbreak continues and highlights critical public health efforts and outreach.

Dr. Lucey has tracked information on infectious disease outbreaks with global ramifications for nearly 20 years, following and responding to data on anthrax in 2001, SARS in 2003, H5N1 influenza in 2004, and recent outbreaks of Ebola, MERS and Zika.
