FY 2020 Ending the HIV Epidemic Awards

The Department of Health and Human Services has awarded more than $117 million in funding to health centers and Ryan White programs in targeted U.S. cities, counties and states for expanded HIV testing, treatment, prevention and care services during the first year of the federal Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, which seeks to bring a 90% reduction in HIV incidence by 2030. The FY 2020 awards included $55 million in Primary Care HIV Prevention awards to 195 health centers, and nearly $63 million in Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program awards across 39 jurisdictions and eight states.

Of the 48 counties, two cities and seven eligible states targeted in the initiative’s first phase, San Juan, Puerto Rico, confronting the impacts of recent earthquakes as well as capacity restrictions, was the only one that did not apply for the primary care HIV prevention awards, but did receive Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program funding awards totaling $850,000.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative Funding Opportunity Announcement was released in January 2020 with funding planned to begin in June 2020. Last year, the Centers for AIDS Research was awarded supplemental grants to prepare pilot studies for more extensive implementation science research projects in 2020.
