IDSA Hosts Research Summit on Outpatient Antimicrobial Stewardship
IDSA hosted a research summit in Washington, DC, on Oct. 29-30, “Leveraging Existing and Novel Diagnostics for Optimizing Outpatient Antimicrobial Stewardship in Patients with Respiratory Tract Infections.” The meeting was planned by a committee of IDSA volunteers led by Drs. Ebb Lautenbach, MPH, FIDSA, Robin Patel, FIDSA, and Jeffrey Gerber, Ph.D., FPIDS.
The goals of the summit were to:
- Develop policy recommendations to drive implementation of antimicrobial stewardship
in outpatient settings, with a focus on increased uptake of diagnostic tests; and - Develop outcomes study recommendations to assess and fill research gaps.
Participants included representatives from the diagnostics industry, key payers, adult and pediatric primary care clinicians, federal agencies, global partners and IDSA members who conduct research on diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship. Presentations and breakout sessions focused on tests for viral respiratory diseases in ambulatory settings.
Meeting recommendations will be captured in a 2020 white paper outlining the need for efforts to promote antimicrobial stewardship in ambulatory care and the role of diagnostics for viral respiratory diseases. The paper will also serve as the basis for additional advocacy efforts to secure the funding and policy changes necessary to address recommendations.
